Yes, its really true but no alarm, just read and follow the tip...CCleaner has been recently launched in a version with a security fail but...

Some web rumours state that Piriform doesn't own CCleaner anymore and has been bough by Avast Company witch makes dedicated security software products such as antivírus, firewalls and others.

Well, if Piriform was bought by Avast, or not, that's something we cant say for sure but we do think that's only a statement to have a colourful head news to call attention to the real deal, CCleaner security fail.

Let's look at the facts. At Piriform's blog a notice was published in 18th of September of 2017 that actually states that two CCleaner versions were illegally modified before they were available for public download.

Affected versions

The dangerous versions are for 32bit architectures (x86) and have the following denominations:

    -   CCleaner 5.33.6162 (installer version)

    -   CCleaner 1.07.3191 (cloud version)

Risks

Theoretically, the security fail allows to collect data from the installed programs, some specific operative system information, user processes and privileges respectively.

It is also able to collect information about the first three installed network cards, as an example the MAC Address.

The informations collected from the infected computer's are then forwarded to a remote ip address so it can arrive to the attacker.

Solution

In order to solve the case rapidly Piriform launched an automatic update on the cloud forcing the affected version to be upgraded to a newer version that has already the security fail solved.

It is highly recommended that users who use the install version and don't regularly update CCleaner to check if have an affected version installed, CCleaner 5.33.6162 (installer version), 32bit architecture (x86), and update it to a newer version, witch its also recommended by Piriform.

From our side, iPonto, we also recommend users to execute a deep anti-virus scan to all storage devices as well as run an anti-malware so it would be a contribute to eradicate the threat within this CCleaner version.
